Maine has a long traditional of midwifery care including prominent historical figures like Martha Ballard. For hundreds, and perhaps thousands of years midwives have welcomed babies here. Now, midwives in Maine attend births in a variety of settings, including homes, freestanding birth centers, and hospitals. According to the State of Maine, in 2016, 2.1% of the babies born in Maine were born at home.
In 2016 the legislature passed LD690 An Act to Assure the Safety of Home Birth. This creates a licensing mechanism in Maine that would allow Certified Professional Midwives to be licensed by 2020. Currently the rules and regulations related to the statute are being negotiated.
